The Last Frontier

September 1942. The forces of Nazi Germany and its allies are relentlessly advancing toward the Caucasian oil fields. The Turkish army is already poised, should they succeed, to deliver a decisive blow to the USSR. It seems that no force in the entire world is capable of stopping the Nazis anymore…

But such a force emerges from the ruins of the small Black Sea city of Novorossiysk, nearly wiped off the face of the earth after fierce battles fought by the Red Army against the vastly superior forces of the fascist occupiers. For its defenders and residents, the enemy-ravaged streets become the last frontier where they must make the one and only right choice – to win at any cost or lose everything.

The book is intended for a wide audience interested in military literature and the history of World War II. It recounts the heroic pages of the legendary Novorossiysk defense of 1942–1943, which fundamentally turned the tide of the battle for the Caucasus in favor of the USSR and, consequently, determined the outcome of the entire war in favor of the anti-Nazi coalition.

In November 2020, the novel was translated into Italian by Matteo Mazzoni, and in April 2023 it was translated into English by Debarati Dutta.

Furthermore, in March 2022, Syrian literary translator Adnan Djamus completed the Arabic translation of the novel, and the book was registered among the foreign works scheduled for publication in Damascus according to the Executive Plan of the National Translation Project of the General Books Council under the Ministry of Culture of the SAR for 2022. However, because Sergey Konyashin openly criticized the war against Ukraine launched by Putin on February 24, 2022—and, disagreeing with Kremlin policies, left Russia in May 2022—the book was withdrawn from publication at the request of the Russian authorities, and its release in Arabic did not take place.

The action of the historical novel “The Last Frontier” takes place on the ruins of Novorossiysk - a small town on the Black Sea shore, almost completely swept away the face of the earth in the result of fierce battles with the fascist invaders in 1942-1943. This is a very difficult time for Russia that is drastically drained after a whole line of crushing defeats. Each of the heroes experiences it in his own way. Some of them demonstrate unparalleled heights of resilience and courage, others try to settle old scores in order to save their lives through deception and betrayal. But for all of them, as well as for the Wehrmacht’s - many times superior - troops, rapidly rushing to the Caucasus, the fierce battles at cement plants on the eastern outskirts of Novorossiysk are in some way their own last frontier, on which they must make a difficult choice - to die or to win. The storyline is based on the fate of two completely dissimilar friends, fighters of the 305th Soviet marine battalion - Andrey Novitsky (a native of Novorossiysk) and Endel Mari (the Estonian). They, miraculously survived in the deadly battle at Balka Adamovicha, do not hesitate to respond to the proposal of their commander, major Caesar Kunikov, to go to an even more fierce battle - in a daring night landing on the western shore of Tsemesskaya Bay, on the now legendary Malaya Zemlya armplace. Sometimes the novel is scary in describing the Nazi atrocities and the horrors of war. The author equally does not spare either his heroes or readers, successively, page by page, exposing the terrible price of the great victory, which no heroism and no achievements of top military leaders will ever justify. This book is a reminder not only of why and thanks to whom we have a clear sky over our heads, but also rather that it should never happen again.
